Proposals to build a casino in Toronto, Canada have been shot down by the mayor and the Ontario premier.
Although various councillors are eager for a Toronto-owned casino, the city executive rejected the request at a meeting yesterday.
Meanwhile, province premier Dalton McGuinty told the Globe and Mail that the position he had taken is that there will be no expansion of new casinos.
But city councillors are adamant that a casino would boost the public purse and help stamp out illegal gambling.
Speaking to the Toronto Sun, councillor Giorgio Mammoliti said: "We've already got a gambling industry in this city - they're called bingo halls."
"Anyone that hasn't gone in, you should go in, at least on Fridays, because there are $10,000 and $15,000 jackpots."
