Korea to host poker tournament

2007-09-18 15:24:27

The first ever world-class poker tournament in Asia is to be held in Seoul – a sign that poker tourism is an increasingly lucrative market.

PokerStars' Asia Pacific Poker Tour (APPT) will be held at the Paradise Seoul Casino between September 28th and 30th.

It is thought that 2005 World Series of Poker winner Joe Hachem will make an appearance at the event.

Jeffrey Haas, president of the APPT, told the Korea Times that the tournament is intended for poker tourists "who want to experience something exciting and new along with their favorite pastime".

"We saw an opportunity to promote Seoul as a unique tourist destination for international poker players who wanted a great poker tournament experience," he added.

However, Korean nationals will be unable to play and the tournament will not be televised because of the government's distaste for gambling.
