Female poker games a 'fast-growing sector'

2007-09-26 15:12:28

The number of women taking part in poker tournaments is growing faster than in other type of game, it has been claimed.

According to CardPlayer.com, the introduction of Ladies Night by the World Poker Tour was the first time that women could play for big stakes in a processional arena, thereby opening "the gate for ladies to get into the game".

Lupe Soto, the founder of the Ladies International Poker Series (Lips), said: "We are here to provide venues for women to get into the sport.

"I know women can compete equally with men in poker, which is unlike other sports that take physical strength into account, but it is about preference, learning, and choice."

Earlier this month, there was controversy at the California State Championships when several men insisted they be allowed to play in the ladies event.

Due to anti-discrimination laws the men could not be refused, but the decision to let them play angered many in the female poker community who felt they were being intimidated.
