2007-11-14 16:49:52

Mike Vela has won the World Poker Tour's (WPT) World Poker Finals for 2007.

Going into the final table in third place, Vela managed to outlast his five fellow competitors and walk away with the title, along with $1,704,986.

Winner of the 2005 event Nick Schulman finished in second place, getting the runner-up prize of $864,652.

Nenand Medic was third, earning $486,367, according to Card Player.

Vela slowly built up his chip count throughout the day's play and had gone into the final two with a lead of just under nine million.

Schulman amazingly was left with a similar amount to the one he started the day with and was eventually eliminated when Vela's Ace-Queen bettered his pocket fives after the river.

Medic had gone into the final table with the short stack but clung on to finish third.

Before the tournament, Vela was ranked number 3,242 in Card Player's player of the year rankings.
