It is important that poker players learn to recognize certain 'tells' in the people they are playing, it has been argued.
An article on Point-Spreads says that taking note of how people usually play can help to give players an advantage - and they can even use the same technique in online games.
"Poker players may make certain faces when they have a specific hand, or exhibit certain habits when a particular type of card is drawn," it said.
"Either way, you should always be on the look out for anything that is genuinely a tell and could help you to know your opponent better."
The article also mentioned that if a player keeps an eye on how other people are playing, it might make them better able to recognize what they are giving away themselves - and help them to combat it.
One form of tell, for example, could be a player betting in a repetitive fashion.
