Faustman wins first ever WPT event

2008-01-25 11:40:36

Brett Faustman won the first World Poker Tour (WPT) event of his life yesterday (January 24th) after outlasting his final table opponents to take down the World Poker Open.

The Michigan amateur took home $892,413 for his troubles, almost double the amount of second-placed Hoyt Corkins ($458,267), whom Faustmann beat after a thrilling head-to-head, Card Player reports.

Faustman entered the heads-up with a marginal chip lead - unusual for this type of tournament - and as such the final period of play lasted a lot longer than average.

Finally, after 43 hands, Faustman emerged the winner. As part of his prize, he also won a place at the WPT Championship and bracelet made from gold and diamonds.

Men Nguyen finished third, with Freddy Deeb fourth, Gabe Costner fifth and John Spadavecchia fifth.

The World Poker Open boasted the fifth lowest pot of any event on the tour so far and Faustman's winnings are almost just a third of the amount won by Eugene Katchalov at the Doyle Brunson Five Diamond World Poker Classic.
