Presidential candidates 'should play poker'

2008-01-28 12:32:59

Those currently competing to be the next US president should take part in a televised poker game against one another, an academic has said.

Charles Nesson, the Harvard Law School professor who founded the Global Poker Strategic Thinking Society (GPSTS), said that a poker game could demonstrate whether the candidates have what it takes to lead the country.

"[Poker] is one of the best tools we have to teach negotiation, risk assessment, strategic thinking and other essential life skills," he told comedy political show The Colbert Report.

"This is an exciting opportunity for the public to see how poker provides important insights into a candidate's personality more effectively than any debate."

Mr Nesson has been arguing the merits of poker as an educational tool for several years and has been the focus of articles in The Economist and the New York Times.

His appearance on Colbert can be seen on the GPSTS website.
