Griffin wins first WPT title

2008-02-01 11:49:53

Gavin Griffin won his first World Poker Tour (WPT) championship last night, making him the only player in poker history to win events from all three major tours.

The 26-year-old added the Borgata Poker Classic to his rapidly growing collection of titles, which also includes a World Series of Poker bracelet from 2004 and a European Poker Tour (EPT) Monte Carlo event.

Because of the EPT winnings, last night's victory only gave him the second biggest pot of his career at $1,401,109, according to Card Player.

Griffin defeated David Tran in the heads-up after both had entered the final table clear of the rest of the field.

Tran had more than a two million-chip lead at one stage but Griffin reeled him in and forced the California resident to take the $737,685 second-place check.

Gavin has been featured on the front cover of numerous poker magazines including Card Player and Poker Pro Europe.
