Texas hold 'em used to encourage student involvement

2008-02-07 17:01:32

The popular poker discipline of Texas hold 'em has been used at a university in the US to get students involved, according to a report from the university in question.

Northern Kentucky University gave students a chance to play the game for prizes such as university-branded sweatshirts and gift cards for a local eatery, the Northerner reports.

"I've played poker ever since I was little and I haven't been able to play as much as I used to," said Chris Tinsley, a sophomore at the university, according to the newspaper.

The winner of the three-hour tournament took home a Texas hold 'em set, having defeated the other 23 players who sat down to test their poker skills.

Sean Blahnik, the winner of the university tournament, will no doubt be looking at the success of another young poker player with envy.

Mike McDonald, an 18-year-old from Canada, recently won the German Open event of the European Poker Tour, scooping a prize in the region of $1.4 million.
