Season seven of the World Poker Tour (WPT), which is scheduled to begin in July, will feature six fewer tournaments than the current series, it has been revealed.
Steve Lipscomb, chief executive of parent company WPT Enterprises, told Card Player the decision was made in order to cater to contestant demands.
"Players let us know [where they prefer to play] verbally and they also vote with their tournament dollar," he said.
"I think we're trying to be mindful of places that people really want to go [and] where they want to play."
The tournaments being canned are the Turks and Caicos Poker Classic, the World Poker Challenge, the WPT Spanish Championship, the Mirage Poker Showdown, the Mandalay Bay Poker Championship and Ladies Night.
Poker fans may be surprised to see the Mirage event go, as its winner's prize was $1.07 million in season six, over $250,000 more than the Gulf Coast Poker Championship, which survived the cull.
