Former winners return for heads-up championship

2008-02-21 14:54:50

All three previous National Heads-Up Championship winners will compete next week, in an attempt to become the first double titlist in the event's four-year history.

Phil Hellmuth, Ted Forrest and Paul Wasicka will line up against some of the best players in the sport, as well as qualifiers and celebrities, Card Player reports.

Among the participants more famous for their exploits away from poker are Shannon Elizabeth, Don Cheadle and Jason Alexander, while Gavin Smith, Phil Laak, Barry Greenstein and Gus Hansen are just a few of the top professionals on hand.

Names will be drawn from a hat to decide the opening brackets on February 28th, with the tournament beginning the next day.

The total prize pool is worth $1.5 million and one player who may be particularly eager to get in on the winnings is David Pham. The California resident is currently fifth in Card Player's player of the year rankings and a good result here could see him move up the table even further.
