Ferguson wins heads-up crown

2008-03-03 10:01:00

Chris Ferguson is the new National Heads-Up Poker champion after victory in Las Vegas over the weekend.

Ferguson had competed in all three previous tournaments and reached the final in two of them, making him the bookmakers favourite this time around.

The five-time World Series of Poker (WSOP) bracelet winner did not disappoint either, surviving challenges from John Juanda, Mike Matusow, Gavin Smith, Jonathan Little, Phil Ivey and Andy Bloch to take the title.

According to Card Player, Ferguson said "third tries the charm" when lifting his trophy.

As well as the silverware and glory, Ferguson also picked up a check for $500,000 (£252,195), a $10,000 WSOP main event seat and a special championship watch.

Victory was not straightforward for Ferguson at the Caesar's Palace tournament, however.

He literally beat Bloch on the toss of a coin, when his final opponent decided to flip to decide whether he should go all-in or not. The coin told him to do so and Ferguson emerged the winner.
