EPT Grand Final underway

The European Poker Tour (EPT) Grand Final in Monte Carlo kicked off on Saturday with a record number of people taking part.

Day 1a featured 392 players, including a number of top professionals and celebrities.

Unheralded Stephen Kjaerstad took the early tournament lead, finishing the day with 111,200, with Chris Min Lee and Johnny Lodden following behind.

Meanwhile Erick Lindgren, Annete Obrestad and Phil Ivey were all eliminated, while former professional footballer Tomas Brolin, Marcel Luske and Patrik Antonius progressed to the next round.

A further 450 people took part on day 1b, which was ruled by Frenchman Cyril Bensoussan, who generated 135,000 chips.

Joe Hachem and Daniel Negreanu put themselves in good contention, finishing their section in ninth and tenth place respectively, while Vanessa Rousso and Chad Brown also qualified.

Among the day's biggest casualties were reigning champion Gavin Griffin, Bertrand Grospellier and Chris Moneymaker.
