Chorny the new EPT: Grand Final champion

2008-04-18 12:36:04

Glen Chorny has become the first ever Canadian winner of the European Poker Tour Grand Final.

The 22-year-old student from Waterloo, Ontario defeated Denes Kalo in a one-sided heads-up to take home Europe's most prestigious poker title and the biggest cash prize of the year so far - $3.193 million.

Chorny looked in good shape for the trophy early on the last day, but once the final table had been whittled down to four it seemed anybody's for the taking.

Eventually Isaac Baron and Maxime Villemure were dismissed and Chorny was left with an eight to one advantage in the chip count against Kalo.

Just two hands later and he had won the first major event of his career and put himself in a strong position to challenge for player of the year honours.

Antonio Esfandiari, who was perhaps the biggest name to make the eight-man final table, finished in eighth place, behind Velriy Ilikyan, Luca Pagano and Michael Martin.
