Negreanu 'has no problem' with WSOP changes

2008-05-06 17:19:05

Daniel Negreanu has suggested that the changes to the World Series of Poker (WSOP) main event's schedule may actually benefit the sport of poker as opposed to hinder it.

The move to host the final table of the main event more than 100 days after the penultimate day of the tournament finishes so that ESPN can show it almost live has been attacked as a money-grabbing exercise in many quarters.

However, writing in his Full Contact Poker blog, Negreanu claimed that if the broadcaster and the WSOP's owner Harrah's Entertainment do not benefit from the tournament moneywise, it may not take place at all.

"If you are a poker player and love the WSOP, you should actually be rooting for this idea to work because it is in your best interest," he remarked.

Negreanu added that poker is not doing as well as it used to and suggested that people should be willing to try out any idea that could help increase interest.

Roy Winston is one notable poker player who disagrees with Negreanu's opinion and said that the increased revenues for Harrah's should be reflected in the prize pool for the players.
