Mattsson in charge at Casino Barcelona

2008-05-27 14:16:12

Stefan Mattsson leads the chip count at Casino Barcelona heading into the final day of the World Poker Tour (WPT) Spanish Championship.

The Swedish professional has 1,253,000 chips - 222,000 more than second-placed Thiago Nishijima.

Mattsson has never tasted WPT glory before, but he has had success at the World Series of Poker (WSOP) in the past, where he finished 22nd in the main event in 2007.

The first-place prize of $655,720 will be by far the biggest check of his career should he emerge victorious from the six-man final table.

Other players still in contention are Casper Hansen, Martin Lundenius, Guy Sitbon and Andres Vidal.

With the WSOP rapidly approaching, many of the world's best players decided not to attend the first event of the WPT season, which will not be televised.

However, several notable names did make the trip to Spain, including Bill Edler, Antonio Esfandiari, Annette Obrestad and Patrik Antonius.
