US poker players take 2/3 of WSOP pot

2008-07-07 08:34:22

Poker players from the US have won approximately two-thirds of the total prize fund at the World Series of Poker (WSOP) this year, it has been revealed.

Card Player magazine calculated that Americans won more than $83 million of the $123 million available, prior to the main event getting underway last week.

The figures demonstrate the continued dominance of competitors from the US, with Las Vegas and California the two stand-out states - claiming 12 and nine WSOP bracelets each respectively.

Of the 53 bracelets available, 38 went to Americans - and this figure could well go up to 39 in November when the winner of the main event is declared.

Despite increasing numbers of foreign players entering the richest competition in poker, only three of the last ten champions reside outside the US - although last year's winner Jerry Yang and 1998 victor Scotty Nguyen were both born elsewhere.
