WSOP main event field tops last year's

Almost 7,000 people entered the World Series of Poker (WSOP) main event over the weekend, creating the second biggest field in the event's history after 2006.

Spread out from Thursday to Sunday, 6,844 competitors took part in day one of the $10,000 No-Limit Hold'em World Championship, with dozens of big names getting sent home early.

David Pham, Jonathan Little and Shannon Shorr were among the stars eliminated on day 1a, with Daniel Negreanu, Ted Forrest and Jamie Gold joining them on day 1b.

David Chiu, JC Tran, Huck Seed and Gavin Griffin were just a few of day 1c's casualties, while Chris Ferguson, Annie Duke and Layne Flack also tasted early defeated during day 1d.

Many top professionals enjoyed greater success at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino.

Patrik Antonius, David Singer, Carlos Mortensen and Gus Hansen were all near of the top of the leaderboard on their respective days, while the likes of Phil Hellmuth and Johnny Chan both survived the action.
