Unknown players dominate WSOP main event

2008-07-14 14:46:25

Most of the remaining 27 competitors in the World Series of Poker (WSOP) main event will likely not be familiar to followers of the popular card game.

Dennis Phillips and Craig Marquis, who lead the chip count overnight, have not won any big tournaments of note, while third-placed Tiffany Michelle may be known but only as a journalist for Poker News.

Brandon Cantu and Phi Nguyen are the only players left who have won major poker titles in the past, with the likes of Phil Hellmuth, Mike Matusow and Gus Hansen all crashing out of the competition over the weekend.

Indeed, there are so many low-profile players left in the competition that it led Daniel Negreanu to write a post about it on his Full Contact Poker blog.

He claimed to know just five, mentioning Scott Montgomery and David Rheem, as well as Cantu, Nguyen and Michelle.

The last 27 will play tonight to determine which nine will return for the final table in November.
