Poker world split over Hellmuth penalty decision

2008-07-16 16:10:21

There is a huge difference of opinion on whether tournament organisers were right to rescind a penalty against Phil Hellmuth at the World Series of Poker (WSOP) main event this week.

Hellmuth was penalised for throwing an insult at one of the people he was playing against and told he would have to sit out an entire level of play.

After complaining that the punishment was unfair, the most successful competitor in WSOP history had the ban repealed.

Daniel Negreanu is one top professional who has spoken out in favour of the decision to let Hellmuth play.

He said while he cannot condone the Poker Brat's behaviour, he had been allowed to get away with it all tournament so "it is slightly unfair to enforce it all of a sudden".

Ken McKusik appeared to disagree with Negreanu. He told the Baltimore Sun that had it been a player less famous than Hellmuth, the penalty would no doubt have been upheld.
