Aussie Millions considered worthy by Hellmuth

2008-07-24 15:35:37

The Aussie Millions' reputation as one of the world's most important poker tournaments received a boost this week when Phil Hellmuth decided he would count it as a points contributor to his Champion of the Year (COTY) competition.

Hellmuth, who has won 11 World Series of Poker bracelets in the last 20 years, said in his Card Player blog that so many of the sport's stars are now taking part in the Melbourne tournament that he has to include it.

This is despite the Poker Brat electing not to attend himself in 2008.

"With the preponderance of great players that attended the main event in Melbourne, Australia the last two years, should this event count in the COTY award? My thinking is yes," Hellmuth remarked.

The first Aussie Millions event was held in 1998 and had a first-place prize of just AU$25,900 ($24,874). Ten years later this figure has grown to a whopping AU$1.65 million.
