WSOP 'sliding in popularity'

2008-07-28 15:04:15

The biggest occasion in card playing, the World Series of Poker (WSOP), is on a downwards slope, according to one publication.

Old episodes of the WSOP have been doing poorly on ESPN Classic and new shows look set to follow, the Washington Times reports.

"Repeats already have killed ESPN Classic, so it's only a matter of time before it jumps the shark on ESPN as well," the newspaper said.

The assertion does not appear to be backed up by official figures from the WSOP's owner Harrah's Entertainment, which revealed that more people attended this year's event than ever before.

Indeed, several records were broken and the prize pool for the $10,000 No-Limit Hold'em World Championship tournament was up significantly on 2007.

Other major sporting occasions "on the decline", according to the Washington Times, are the FedEx Cup, the Tour de France and the NFL Pro Bowl.

Interest is apparently also waning in Triple Crown horse races.
