WSOP attendance "surprised everyone"

2008-07-31 15:19:46

Nobody was expecting the 2008 World Series of Poker (WSOP) to do as well as it did.

At least this is the belief of Alan Bowden, a spokesman for InsidePoker Magazine.

He claimed that its successes, which include breaking several attendance records and generating a total prize fund worth over $20 million more than last year, "surprised everyone".

Mr Bowden attributed the shock results to "doomsayers" in the US, who "expected across the board for the US public to lose interest in the game".

However, just because the WSOP surpassed expectations this summer, does not necessarily mean the final table of the main event will prove to be a hit in November, he added.

Mr Bowden said people can be "confident" that broadcaster ESPN will be able to keep the buzz currently surrounding the tournament alive because of the amount of money they are putting in.

But no-one knows for sure how it will do until the time comes, he explained.
