Scott Montgomery has been backed by fans as the favorite to win the World Series of Poker (WSOP) main event, according to a new survey.

Out of 1,106 poker players surveyed by Duplicate Poker, the Canadian was thought to be most likely to triumph by 29 percent.

Ivan Demidov of Russia and the chip leader Dennis Phillips were tipped to emerge victorious by 13 and 12 per cent respectively.

The poll also revealed that 90 per cent of players believed that skill rather than luck was key to winning in the game.

Moshe Davidovich, chief operating officer of Duplicate Poker, commented: "The most skilled poker players have the ability to effectively manage a game and rely purely on technique. In this regard, Scott Montgomery stands out."

The victor at the final table will take home $9,119,517 from the $66,333,600 prize pool, while the first to go out will still win over $900,000.
