Winston's charge runs into bad beat

2008-08-13 16:33:30

Jonathan Thompson, the Men's Health journalist who has been receiving poker tips from Roy Winston in recent days, could not avoid a bad beat this week, despite the Oracle's expert advice.

Winston, the reigning Borgata Poker Open champion, told Card Player readers of hand in which his charge did nothing wrong but was still unable to escape a big hit when his straight lost to an opponent's flush.

"Sometimes you are just destined to lose a hand," the one-time World Poker Tour titlist said to Mr Thompson when asked if it would have been possible to do better in that situation.

Winston suggested that the writer did well to realise the situation he was in after the river and not place a bet when his opponent decided to check.

Following eight cashes in major poker tournaments this year, Winston lies in 175th position in Card Player's player of the year rankings.
