2008-09-11 12:42:54

Season five of the European Poker Tour (EPT) kicked off yesterday with the Barcelona Open in Spain.

A total of 292 card sharps turned up to Casino Barcelona to compete in the event, with some of the biggest names going to the rail in the early going, Card Player reports.

Dave 'Devilfish' Ulliott, Annette Obrsetad, Greg Raymer, Vicky Coren and Barny Boatman were among the casualties on day 1a, which saw 180 players eliminated in all.

Michael Murra lead the chip count overnight, ahead of Ramzi Jelassi and Andre Akkari.

Chad Brown, Isaac Haxton, Jason Mercier and Scott Montgomery were some of the famous faces who progressed safely to day two.

Prior to the EPT event getting underway, an awards ceremony was held with Nottingham's Julian Thew picking up two gongs for his achievements in season four.

He won best performance and the poker writers accolade, while Luca Pagano was named player of the year.

Thew has earned more than $2.3 million in live tournaments during his career.
