EPT Barcelona boasts record prize fund

2008-09-12 14:37:08

The European Poker Tour (EPT) Barcelona Open has broken last year's attendance record.

A total of 619 card sharps turned up to compete in the event in total, with the winner set to receive €1.361 million ($1.91 million) - just under €200,000 more than Mark Teltscher received for his victory in 2007.

The increase in numbers was in line with predictions made by InsidePoker magazine's Alan Bowden prior to the tournament getting underway.

Among the big name players who took part on day 1b were Gavin Griffin, Daniel Negreanu and Bertrand Grospellier - all of whom were eliminated, Card Player reports.

Negreanu is the only one of the three who has never won an EPT event before, despite numerous attempts.

Had he managed to take victory he would have joined Griffin as the only competitor to hold poker's Triple Crown of EPT, World Series of Poker and World Poker Tour titles.
