Small raise 'the best way to play low pocket pairs'

2008-09-16 15:08:49

A small raise pre-flop "is the very best option" available to poker players who have been dealt a low pocket pair.

At least this is according to four-time World Series of Poker bracelet holder Daniel Negreanu, who outlined the possible strategies for playing such a hand in an article for Grand Rapids Press.

The Canadian, who is also a double World Poker Tour titlist, suggested that while most competitors limp in with pocket fours, for example, it could make the player a target for aggressive opponents.

He said that moving all-in is a "high risk, low reward proposition", while folding is a "reasonable" move, particularly in games where re-raises are likely.

"When dealt a small pocket pair in early position, making a small raise should be your go-to play," he remarked, explaining that the move probably will not be attacked by others and also gives the person the chance to steal the blinds.

Negreanu last competed at the European Poker Tour Barcelona Poker Open, where he was knocked out early and failed to finish in the money.
