Martin takes down EPT London

2008-10-06 12:13:15

Michael Martin won the first major title of his career last night in the European Poker Tour (EPT) London event at the Casino at the Empire in London's Leicester Square.

The Pennsylvanian defeated Michael Tureniec in the heads-up to take the championship and the £1,000,000 first-place prize.

Card Player reports that the end came when Tureniec pushed all-in pre-flop with king-nine off-suit and Martin called with a pair of fours, which turned into a set for the victory.

It completed a remarkable underdog performance from Martin, who pulled off "the greatest comeback in EPT history", according to the publication.

He became the only American ever to win an EPT event in the English capital.

Marcin Horecki finished in third place, followed by Eric Liu, Philippe Dauteuil, Alan Smurfit, Johannes Strassmann and Anthony Lellouche.

Once the scores for Card Player's player of the year competition have been added up, it is possible that Martin could break into the top 100, having already made two other significant final table finishes so far in 2008.
