Juanda denied huge London double

2008-10-08 11:59:33

Jason Mercier took down the Europe Poker Tour (EPT) £1 Million Showdown in London last night, denying John Juanda his second major victory inside a week.

After the elimination of the other 83 competitors from the £20,000 ($35,170) buy-in event, Juanda and Mercier were left playing heads-up, with the former holding a two-to-one chip advantage, Card Player reports.

But Mercier managed to overcome the deficit and eventually prevailed when his king-queen bested Juanda's ace-jack in the final hand of the day.

The Florida resident picked up £516,000 for the victory, while Juanda - who won last week's World Series of Poker Europe main event - had to settle for £327,000.

Michael Watson finished third, followed by Peter Jetten, Scotty Nguyen, Isaac Haxton, Masaaki Kagawa, David Benyamine and Isabelle Mericer.

According to the Hendon Mob, Mercier is now seventh in the EPT's all-time money list and third in the overall earnings rankings for 2008, with a total of $2,752,423.
