Older players' achievements 'still mean something'

2008-10-14 12:20:06

Doyle Brunson has stuck up for the achievements of he and some of his peers and suggested that just because poker tournaments have more participants these days, it does not necessarily mean the regular winners are better than they were in the past.

The hall-of-famer wrote in his blog that the World Series of Poker records of a lot of older competitors are often dismissed, with people assuming that it was easier to win 30 years ago than it is now.

However, Brunson defended his era, saying: "Well, a final table is a final table and in the old days the field was thinner but tougher."

He referred to how Johnny Moss won eight of his 22 final table appearances and finished second twice, while Billy Baxter took down seven of his 11 final tables and came second once.

"Some of us dinosaurs could close the deal also," he remarked.

Brunson won his last WSOP title in 2005 and Baxter picked up his last bracelet in 2002.
