Witmer wins first WPT title

2008-10-17 12:21:19

Amateur card sharp Glen Witmer was crowned champion last night at the World Poker Tour (WPT) North American Poker Championship at the Falls View Casino in Niagara Falls.

The local competitor built a 3:1 chip lead going into the heads-up with Gavin Smith and held on for victory, clinching the win when his ace-king came out on top against his opponent's pocket fives in the final hand of the day.

Witmer earned $1,090,589 for the triumph, while Smith received $532,545 for finishing second.

Kathy Liebert went home in third with $277,684 in her pocket, followed by Ryan Fisler ($228,234), Marc Karam ($171,175) and Jim Trenholm ($133,137).

WPT followers will not have long to wait until the prestigious tournament series gets back up-and-running again.

The tour heads to the Bellagio Casino in Las Vegas next week for the six-day Festa Al Lago main event, which gets underway on October 20th and features a $15,000 buy-in.
