WSOP and WPT 'moving in opposite directions'

2008-10-23 12:44:17

The World Poker Tour (WPT) is in decline while the World Series of Poker (WSOP) is proving as popular as ever, a new article from the San Antonio Express-News has suggested.

Chuck Blount wrote for the news provider that the WSOP is still pulling in strong ratings on ESPN, while the WPT has struggled to secure and hold on to television deals over the last few years.

Similar observations have been made by other industry experts in recent months, with InsidePoker magazine editor Alan Bowden claiming in September that the European Poker Tour is the tour of the future, not the WPT.

Dave Woods, PokerPlayer Magazine's editor, said just a week earlier that "the standard of the WPT has dropped considerably", while the WSOP remains the biggest and most prestigious tour in card playing.

This year's WSOP in Las Vegas drew more participants than ever before and featured the second biggest tournament in the history of the sport as its main event.
