Web design student wins A$25,000 in poker game

2008-10-28 15:15:42

A 33-year-old web design student in Australia won a jackpot of A$25,000 in a Gold Coast poker tournament.

Jamie Hammond of East Ballina said he "still can't believe" his win at the Indy Poker Tournament, in which he competed against 60 other players in three rounds of heats, the Northern Star reported.

He said he now plans to take a few weeks off to go surfing in Bali with his winnings.

The event, held at Conrad Jupiters Casino, had a A$500 entry fee. Mr Hammond told the newspaper that he usually plays cards twice a week with a group of friends, but that they usually play for A$100.

Conrad Jupiters Casino features more than 70 table games and 1,300 gaming machines.

It recently underwent a $53 million refurbishment, which was the largest upgrade performed on the complex in its 21-year history. An extra 3,500 square metres of casino floor were added during the extensive renovations, which also included new furnishings, lighting and contemporary gaming products.

The facility is located on Broadbeach Island and is an hour's drive from Brisbane Airport.
