'Poker legends' expected at WSOP event

The star power of names such as Chris Ferguson and Johnny Chan at the World Series of Poker (WSOP) Lake Tahoe Circuit Event could increase the number of participants this year, the Tahoe Daily Tribune has reported.

According to the newspaper, the event is set to kick off today (November 6th) at Harveys Resort Casino and Spa with a tournament for Harrah's employees.

Tomorrow, the first public event - a No Limit Hold'Em tournament with a $340 buy-in - is expected to draw one of the largest turnouts at the nine-day event, which is set to wrap up on November 16th.

A similar tournament with a $550 buy-in is scheduled to take place at Harveys on both Saturday and Sunday this weekend.

Steve Schorr, race and sports book manager at Harveys, said that he hopes that players such as Chan and Ferguson - the latter of whom is the defending main event champion - entice more people to the event.

"We are hoping that we get even more people than last time," he said. "We know the economy is a little soft right now, so we did more advertising this time around."

In other WSOP news, the final table for the 2008 WSOP Main Event will reconvene early next week, with the final event to be broadcast on ESPN next week.
