Eastgate crowned WSOP main event winner

2008-11-11 12:33:23

Peter Eastgate has become the second biggest winner in poker history after triumphing in the 2008 World Series of Poker (WSOP) main event.

The Danish competitor picked up $9,152,416 for the victory, which came after 274 hands of heads-up play against Ivan Demidov.

In the final hand of the day, Demidov pushed all-in following the river with two-pair, fours and deuces.

Eastgate instantly called with ace-five, which made a wheel straight on the board to hand him the sport's most prestigious title.

With the win, Eastgate overtakes Phil Hellmuth as the youngest ever WSOP champion at the age of 24 and moves into 11th place in the Hendon Mob's all-time money list.

Daniel Negreanu revealed in his Full Contact Poker blog after day one of the final table that he had placed a bet on Eastgate and Demidov to win the title, leaving him a guaranteed winner once the heads-up was decided.
