Joao Barbosa of Portugal picked up the first major tournament title of his career last night (November 19th) with victory at the European Poker Tour (EPT) Polish Open.
The 26-year-old, who was celebrating his birthday, received 367,140 ($459,786) for the win, which came after he defeated Nico Behling in the heads-up.
Dario Minieri - the chip leader heading into the final table - finished third to lift up to 11th position in Card Player's player of the year race with 3,784 points - just 16 points outside the top ten.
Atanas Gueorguiev came fourth, followed by Arnaud Mattern, Sergey Shcherbatskiy, Andrea Benelli, Ludovic Lacay and Michael Muheim.
It was the first time in the history of the EPT that a Portuguese competitor has walked away with the trophy, although Barbosa had come reasonably close on a previous occasion.
He finished 26th at EPT London last month, earning just over $22,000 for his troubles.
