Players treat you differently as a woman, says male internet card sharp

2008-11-21 12:08:57

A male poker player who competes online using a female avatar has suggested that by pretending to be a woman he can gain an advantage over his rivals on the virtual felt.

John, who bears the moniker GeorgieBoy4, told the Times that he uses a picture of a "leggy brunette" to represent him on the internet, which has resulted in several instances of male opponents trying to flirt with him.

"I think players do treat you differently as a woman," he explained. "They're less inclined to think you might be bluffing."

The comments were made at a recent website-run live poker tournament at the Loose Cannon Club in London, with journalist Dominic Wells remarking that there was a "glaring discrepancy" between the few women in attendance and the multitude who appear to be competing online.

Avatars are not the only weapon used by some players online in an attempt to put off their opponents.

Top card sharp Tom Dwan famously uses the nickname Durrr because he felt it would affect the gameplay of anyone who lost a pot to him.
