Brunson: I used to laugh at small ball

2008-11-26 12:12:16

Doyle Brunson has revealed that until recently, he did not have much respect for the small ball approach to tournament poker playing endorsed by the likes of Daniel Negreanu.

Writing in his blog, the Texas Dolly suggested that the reason for this is probably because he is a cash game player and those tactics do not work particularly well in that format.

However, in recent months he has begun to realise that small ball has its merits, at least in competitions.

"I used to laugh at Daniel's and Phil Hellmuth's small ball approach, but I'm a bottom line guy and it looks like they are the two best tournament players right now," he remarked.

Brunson made his comments as he congratulated Negreanu on winning the BC Poker Championships this week - the Canadian's second major victory of the year after his World Series of Poker triumph.

Hellmuth has yet to pick up a title in 2008, but has made several final tables.
