Eastgate's WSOP winnings hit by 72.77% tax

2008-11-26 12:14:44

Peter Eastgate was not the biggest money winner at the 2008 World Series of Poker (WSOP) main event in real terms, it has been reported.

The 22-year-old Dane, who earned more than $9.1 million for triumphing in poker's most lucrative event, will have to pay 72.77 percent of his winnings to the Danish government in tax, Poker News reports.

Eastgate was apparently looking to move to the UK - where poker winnings are not taxed - in order to get out of the massive payment, but was not given citizenship.

This makes runner-up Ivan Demidov of Moscow the richest man from the final table combatants, as he will pay a levy of 13 percent to the Russian government on his $5.8 million winnings.

Eastgate is currently in the UK competing in the PartyPoker Premier League III and is looking to be the first WSOP main event champion to win the competition.
