Mizzi takes down first live poker tournament

2008-12-05 15:53:08

Internet superstar Sorel Mizzi has finally picked up his first live poker title with victory at the Five Diamond World Poker Classic at the Bellagio, Las Vegas.

Mizzi, known online as Imper1um, had already cashed in numerous events this year, with his best finish second place in the pot-limit Omaha tournament at the World Series of Poker Europe.

But until this week, he had yet to taste the glory of winning a competition in the live format.

His triumph came when he defeated Nicolas Fraioli in the heads-up of a $3,000 buy-in no-limit hold'em tournament, picking up $143,050 for his troubles.

World Poker Tour titlist Brandon Cantu also played in the final table and finished in fifth place.

Mizzi made his name competing in poker on the internet and finished third in Card Player's online player of the year competition in 2007.

Lance Bradley of Bluff magazine commented: "It was only a matter of time before Sorel Mizzi broke through."
