Amateur triumphs at APPT Sydney

Amateur card sharp Martin Rowe became a millionaire over the weekend, taking victory in the Asia Pacific Poker Tour (APPT) Grand Final in Sydney.
The 34-year-old Aussie, who works in the insurance industry, defeated countryman Jason Gray in the heads-up to clinch the title and AU$1 million (US$661,946) prize, according to the official APPT website.
Rowe's win came when Gray pushed all-in pre-flop with nine-five suited and he called with ace-queen, which held up against the board.
Tony Basile finished third, followed by Antonio Fazzolari, Timothy English, Frank Saffioti, Daniel Kowalski, Hai Bo Chu and Tom Rafferty.
Only two of the final table combatants - Basile and Kowalski - hail from outside Australia, in stark contrast to last year where the majority of the players were from the US.
"I cannot believe I have won tonight," said Rowe after his triumph. "I am just ecstatic - this will be life changing for my family."
