WSOP re-buy events in jeopardy

2008-12-10 12:07:20

The 2009 World Series of Poker (WSOP) may be devoid of re-buy tournaments due to concerns from players, it has been reported.

Card Player magazine quoted WSOP communications director Seth Palansky as saying there have been suggestions that re-buy competitions give professionals an unfair advantage over the rest of the field, with some claiming "that a pro can buy a bracelet" in these events.

Michael Banducci, Mike Matusow, Phil Galfond, Max Greenwood and Layne Flack all triumphed in re-buy competitions at the 2008 WSOP - and the latter has spoken out to defend the re-buy format.

"It's not like there is no play," he remarked. "The field is huge."

However, Flack's opinion does not gel with fellow professional Daniel Negreanu's, with Kid Poker claiming that he and other players of his ilk "have an unfair advantage" in these tournaments and that a WSOP bracelet is too significant a title to be decided by a re-buy.

Negreanu has won four bracelets, none of which have come in re-buy events.
