Hellmuth ahead after day 1a of Doyle Brunson Classic

Phil Hellmuth finished day 1a of the World Poker Tour (WPT) Doyle Brunson Classic the chip leader with 188,150 in his stack.
The Poker Brat had 19,075 more than second-placed Gary Gibbs, who in turn was just less than 7,000 ahead of Clonie Gowen in third, according to the official WPT website.
Kido Pham (153,000), Ryan Young (152,560), Luke Staudenmaier (147,000), Nenad Medic (138,000), Devin Porter (137,675) and Greg Raymer (136,200) made up the rest of the star-studded top ten.
Mike Matusow (113,250), Billy Baxter (91,075), Phil Ivey (82,875) and Barry Greenstein (76,675) were among the other big names to make it through to day two with above-average chip stacks, while Doyle Brunson (59,975) also progressed in the tournament that bears his name.
Bill Edler, Jeff Madsen and Shannon Shorr were on the list of notables to go to the rail.
Hellmuth has never won a WPT title despite numerous attempts. His best finish to date is sixth at the 2008 LA Poker Classic.
