Big names tumble on day three of Doyle Brunson Classic

2008-12-17 12:12:23

A host of big names were eliminated from the World Poker Tour (WPT) Doyle Brunson Classic on day three.

Early frontrunner and 11-time World Series of Poker (WSOP) bracelet holder Phil Hellmuth was knocked out in 93rd place, one position behind fellow hall-of-famer Johnny Chan, the official WPT website reports.

Sorel Mizzi, Howard Lederer and Annie Duke also went to the rail on a day that saw Evan McNiff take the lead with 1,035,000 chips.

David 'Chino' Rheem, who reached the final table of this year's WSOP main event, is second on 905,000, followed by Jack Wu (847,000), Steve Sung (787,000) and Nick Schulman (720,000).

Hoyt Corkins, Robert Mizrachi, David Benyamine, Clonie Gowen, Allen Cunningham, Barry Greenstein and Mike Matusow will also be returning for the penultimate day.

McNiff has never cashed in a WPT event before but will become a millionaire should he manage to hold on for victory at the Bellagio this week.

His best finish to date was 373rd in the 2008 WSOP main event.
