John 'Razor' Phan has been officially named as Card Player's player of the year (POY) for 2008.
The Vietnamese-American won two World Series of Poker bracelets and a World Poker Tour (WPT) title over the summer on his way to achieving an overall score of 6,704 points, which was good enough for victory.
David Pham, the 2007 champion, pushed Phan the closest and could have taken victory had he managed to reach the final table of the WPT Doyle Brunson Classic this week but he was eliminated and will not play tournament poker again until 2009.
Phan looks likely to secure a rare double and win Bluff Magazine's POY tournament as well, although his victory in that competition has yet to be announced.
It is the eighth time in Card Player's POY's 11-year history that the award has gone to a player of Asian origin, with Men Nguyen triumphing four times, Pham twice and Tony Ma once.
