Nazari takes down EPT Caribbean Adventure

2009-01-12 12:11:05

Canada's Poorya Nazari picked up the first major live tournament victory of his career over the weekend, taking down the European Poker Tour (EPT) Caribbean Adventure in Nassau, Bahamas.

Nazari, 22, defeated American Tony Gregg in the heads-up to win $3 million - the biggest non-Grand Final payout in EPT history.

Gregg received $1.7 million for second, while Benjamin Spindler also became a millionaire with a check for $1.1 million.

World Series of Poker bracelet holder Alexandre Gomes was fourth, followed by Pieter Telen, Dustin Dirksen, Dan Heimiller and World Poker Tour titlist Kevin Saul.

Nazari's victory catapults him to the top of Card Player's player of the year rankings with 3,000 points, which would have been good enough for 42nd position in 2008's competition.

Speaking after the triumph, the online qualifier told the EPT website that he did not give himself a chance of victory until he reached the final table.

"It was only today that I started thinking about winning," he remarked.
