Borgata Winter Open underway

2009-01-26 17:40:57

The main event of the Borgata Winter Open has got underway in Atlantic City.

Just under 400 players turned up to compete on day 1a of the $3,000 re-buy event, which is no longer part of the World Poker Tour (WPT) calendar.

Among the big names participating were World Series of Poker (WSOP) and WPT titlist Bill Edler, who successfully made it through to day two, Amnon Filippi, Jacobo Fernandez and Young Phan.

Gavin Griffin made history at the Borgata Winter Open in 2008 when he became the first player ever to win WSOP, European Poker Tour and WPT titles.

He earned $1.4 million for the win, but it appears unlikely that the first-place prize will be as high this year given that the buy-in is $7,000 less than it was 12 months ago.

Roy Winston estimated in his Card Player blog that the champion will likely receive upwards of $500,000.
