A total of 104 players turned out for day one of the $10,000 Wynn Classic main event yesterday.
According to Card Player magazine, the turnout was much better than expected, with the majority of the world's best tournament players currently in San Jose for the World Poker Tour Bay 101 Shooting Star event.
Last year, 183 people took part, but there had been suggestions that the competition might not even manage 50 this time around.
Among the big names to show up were Michael DeMichele, Sorel Mizzi, Eric Baldwin, Jimmy Fricke and Justin Bonomo, each competing for the first-place prize of $348,036.
To cash, a player needs to finish inside the top 12, with $12,610 the lowest payout.
This compares to the 2008 event, when the top 18 competitors finished in the money and Chris Moore received $692,286 for his victory.
Ryan Young earned $355,020 for finishing in second place.
