Brecher takes down Bay 101 Shooting Star

2009-03-23 11:33:07

Steve Brecher secured the first major title of his career on Friday night with victory in the World Poker Tour (WPT) Bay 101 Shooting Star championship in San Jose, California.

Brecher defeated World Series of Poker bracelet holder Kathy Liebert heads-up to take the crown and pick up the $1,025,000 first-place prize.

His triumph came when he moved all-in with ace-nine offsuit pre-flop and Liebert made the call with queen-ten suited. Neither player got any help from the board and Brecher won the tournament thanks to his ace-high kicker.

Chris Moore finished third, ahead of Tony Behari and Thao Le. Chau Vu was the first person to be eliminated from the final table.

The win puts Brecher in fourth place in Card Player's player of the year competition with 2,340 points.

Moore and Liebert sit directly behind him in the top ten with 2,110 and 2,100 points respectively.

Poorya Nazari continues to lead the race with a score of 3,000, followed by Cornel Cimpan (2,730) and Anthony Gregg (2,500).
